The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moon Phase 109.021 is a first-generation example of the manufacture’s iconic moon-phase interpretation of the Lange 1. Retaining the collection’s distinctive asymmetrical dial, outsize date and power-reserve indicator, the addition of a moon-phase display brings another layer of character to the original design. Crafted in their honey gold with an argenté dial, the 109.021 represents an early and classic expression of the Lange 1 Moon Phase.

Our Thoughts:

One of the most interesting aspects of the first-generation Lange 1 Moonphase is how little the fundamental design has changed since its introduction. The moon-phase display integrates naturally into the distinctive asymmetrical layout of the Lange 1, while retaining the outsize date and power-reserve indicator that have come to define the collection. Even with the introduction of the second generation, Lange chose to refine rather than reinvent the watch, speaking to the strength of the original design.

The yellow-gold case of the 109.021 also gives the watch a particularly classic appearance. Lange has since become well known for Honey gold, its proprietary gold alloy with a distinctive warm tone. Today, the material is generally reserved for limited and special-edition pieces, making traditional yellow-gold references such as the 109.021 an interesting contrast to the manufacture’s more exclusive modern use of gold.

The 109.021 therefore holds particular appeal as the Lange 1 Moon Phase in its original form. Its combination of honey gold and an argenté dial feels characteristic of Lange’s earlier production, while the fact that the overall design remains so closely related to the current Lange 1 Moonphase demonstrates how well the original concept has endured.
